Standards as Catalysts for Global Progress
Every year on October 24, World Development Information Day reminds us that informed dialogue is the bedrock of sustainable development. Coinciding with United Nations Day, this observance, established by the UN General Assembly in 1972, calls for global awareness, cooperation and the strategic use of information to address pressing development challenges.
From poverty and inequality to access gaps in education and healthcare, the day underscores the urgency of mobilising public opinion and fostering worldwide solidarity. It also highlights the transformative role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in reducing technological disparities and enabling comprehensive growth.
Standards embody the spirit of World Development Information Day and promote international collaboration by bridging digital divides and enhancing insightful decisions. They empower governments, NGOs and civil society to work together with clarity and purpose.
Several international standards support information dissemination, especially in the context of systems, software and communication technologies. Standards such as, ISO/IEC/IEEE 26511:2018: Systems and software engineering – Requirements for managers of information for users of systems software and services; IEEE/IEC 82079-1:2019: Preparation of information for use (instructions for use of products); IEEE 1680 Family help ensure that information is accessible, accurate and effectively delivered to diverse audiences.
World Development Information Day also aligns with our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As we mark this day, let’s reaffirm our role in shaping a more connected and inclusive world—where standards serve as bridges between ambition and action.
