The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) is more than a technical document—it is a cornerstone of industrial safety, born out of tragedy and sustained by innovation.
In the early 1900s, industrial progress was booming, but so were accidents. Boilers powering factories and ships often exploded without warning, causing devastating loss of life and property. One of the most infamous incidents occurred in 1905 at a shoe factory in Brockton, Massachusetts, where a boiler explosion killed 58 people and injured over 100. At the time, such disasters were often dismissed as “acts of God.”
Recognizing the urgent need for change, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) convened experts in 1911 to draft a unified set of rules for the design, fabrication, and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels. This effort gave birth to the ASME BPVC, first published in 1914-15.
The BPVC introduced rigorous standards for materials, design calculations, welding procedures, and inspection methods. By enforcing these rules, it dramatically reduced catastrophic failures. Over time, the Code expanded to cover nuclear components, piping, and in-service inspections, becoming a global benchmark for safety.
